FAQs

Many home cooks are sceptical about the idea of knife sharpening and concerned with the connotations, so we have addressed some of your concerns below.

How long would it take to get my knives sharpened?

We will arrange a date & time for us to arrive at your address and we can sharpen your knives there and then, just outside of your premise or further afield if preferred. As we do not need to take the knives away, we can offer you a very quick turnaround, and can normally sharpen within a few hours dependent on the number of knives requiring sharpening.

Does it damage the knife?

No, not at all. We employ precise water-cooled sharpening equipment that takes off only a very small amount of metal with each sharpen and also doesn’t overheat the knife maintaining the knife’s hardness and preventing brittleness. Damage (and ironically dulling of) knives is a major concern associated with at-home knife sharpeners, which is what creates the need for a professional service.

Should you re-sharpen regularly?

It depends! It depends on how often you use your knives and how sharp you need the knives to be. Many at home cooks never have their knives sharpened and get by okay but probably find that they need to wrestle with their ingredients to have an effective cut. This is generally the case with meat and especially with bigger cuts of meat which can raise other concerns with an unsharpened knife.

Most home cooks will only need their knives sharpening a few times a year, on the other hand, chefs and butchers could need their knives sharpening on a monthly or weekly basis.

Is it dangerous to use a sharp knife?

No, it is actually more dangerous to use a dull knife despite popular belief. Sharp Knives who are experts in knife care note:

“Most of the safety concerns stem from the additional pressure required to push a dull knife through material”

The additional pressure leads to less control and encourages home cooks to hack at pre-prepared ingredients instead of a gentle slice.

Why would I not just buy new knives?

Buying good quality knives can typically cost between £40 and £250 per knife with specialist knives being even more expensive. As there are multiple knives in a kitchen, this is already a big investment and proper care of each knife is important to prolong lifespan. Sharpening a knife is only a fraction of this cost and restores them to feeling brand new. Customers of Blunt Solutions have even quoted that they are sharpener than when bought new.

Why would I spend money on sharpening my knives?

This was partially covered before, but it is safer primarily. It also make cooking more enjoyable, quicker, and improves the precision of each cut. Sharp knives would be a necessity for butchers, but also for cooks that struggle to apply enough force with their hands such as arthritis. A sharp table knife can make cutting prepared food easier too (like a tough steak).

Why wouldn’t I just sharpen the knives myself?

Using standard home sharpeners can seriously damage if done without applying the correct technique. Standard home sharpeners can also cause the knife to overheat and increase brittleness. This is true for sharpening steels which are often akin to chefs.

Furthermore, these sharpening methods also remove a hefty amount of metal, reducing the lifespan of the knife as well as not achieving the same sharpness or consistency provided by Blunt Solutions.
